Bay Area oil spill spreads, but wildlife mostly unharmed

SAN FRANCISCO — Oil from the largest spill into San Francisco Bay in a decade is fouling beaches and endangering seabirds as far away as the shoreline outside the Golden Gate Bridge, officials said this morning.

Residue from the spill that occurred when a large container ship, the COSCO Busan, struck a Bay Bridge support Wednesday morning has reached as far as the Middle Harbor area in Oakland, said Coast Guard Capt. William Uberti. Areas hit by the spill include Alcatraz and Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, Crissy Field, China Beach, Baker Beach and Point Bonita in San Francisco and Kirby Cove on the Marin County side of the bay.

Lt. Rob Roberts, of the state Department of Fish and Game, said the only wildlife known to be affected by the spill was three seabirds, all of them still alive.
